Goreme Open Air Museum
Goreme Open Air Museum is one of the major place to visit in Cappadocia. The most important feature of Goreme is the breath-taking cave-churches.
The Christian monks who lived in Middle Ages, built these churches by carving the soft volcanic rocks. The monks had the Byzantine cultural influence, therefore they adorned the walls of their churhes with Byzantine style of religious art.
The hermits regarded Cappadocia as one of their most important base for the monasteries. The primary purpose of these men was to live in seclusion. Cappadocia had been a perfect place for living this kind of life.

Majority of the churches in Cappadocia built from 11th Century to 13th Century. Byzantine Empire was the dominating power of the Anatolia at that period. Therefore Cappadocia Churches enable us to observe the Byzantine art of Middle Ages.
The best representatives of Byzantine art considered as the Hagia Sophia and Chora Church which are located in Istanbul. However the Byzantine Iconoclasm had wiped away all mosaics from the capital: Contantinople. Due to their remote location, Cappadocian Churches managed to save their art pieces from the wrath of the Byzantine emperors.

Visiting The Goreme Open Air Museum
If you visit Goreme in summer period, it’s recommended to be there in the early morning. Then you can get to the area as soon as it opens at 08:30. The Goreme Open Air Museum get more crowded towards the noon. Besides it gets too hot.
It may not be so comfortable to walk around a vast landscape under the boiling sun. The unique frescoes of Cappadocian Churches had been damaged by earthquakes, storms, winds and humidity.
Moreover some children had seen the images as devils so they harmed them. The entire area has been protected by the government from the early period of Turkish Republic. It’s now considered as a open-air-museum.
Goreme Museum Entrance Fee 2018
Admission fee for the Goreme Open Air Museum is 25 Turkish Lira. The museum opens from 08:30 a.m. to 07:00 p.m. However it closes earlier for the winter time. Please mind that from November to April, the museum closes at 5 p.m. Since it’s considered as low season.
